#1 Choice: Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed Review
At 4 years old, my little boy adores cars. No surprises there. Boys of all ages love cars. Anyway, he has totally outgrown his convertible crib bed, which he calls his “baby bed.” So now it’s time for a more grown-up bed, and I decided to shop around for a car bed.
When I saw the Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed, I knew I had found what I was looking for. I liked the no-fuss primary colors of blue and red, and the cool decals made the car bed look real.
I showed a photo of the car bed to my son and he squealed with delight. He couldn’t believe that he would be sleeping in a “real” car with front grill, spoiler headboard, footboard and racing tires!
I was concerned that it would be a tight fit in his room, but after measuring all around I decided that there was enough space after all. The racing car bed is 49.2 inches wide and 89.5” long, making it longer and wider than a regular twin bed frame.
The Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed can be ordered at Amazon for around $315. For an item of this size, shipping would cost around $100. Good thing Amazon is shipping it for free with their Super Saver Shipping. It took less than a week for my order to arrive.
The car bed needs some assembly, although it’s simple enough to assemble. All you need is a Philips screw driver and a hammer. Make sure the flat spots of the tires are facing the floor. And take special care when attaching the tires. They’re made of plastic, so you shouldn’t over tighten the screw or the plastic will crack.
The Stock Car Convertible Bed can accommodate a crib mattress or a twin mattress that you lay on two particle board foundations. If you use a crib mattress there will be gaps all around the mattress that you’ll have to stuff with pillows or blankets. I didn’t have that problem, though, because I used a twin mattress. Side rails are in place to keep your child from rolling out.
By the way, make sure you get a good, soft mattress. You can’t use a box spring in the car bed, and a spring mattress is too hard.
Sticking on the decals was the fun part. Naturally, my little boy “helped.” He got to pick out the ones he liked and I got to stick them on.
Pros:
The Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed is made in the USA. It’s sturdily built of durable, double wall plastic. You can easily convert it from a toddler bed (using a crib mattress) to a twin bed when your toddler gets older.
Little boys will have fun with the car bed. If they’re like my son, they won’t be able to wait to go to bed.
Cons:
Store prices are quite high, and if you buy them online you’ll have to deal with costly shipping charges. However, if you can have them shipped for free you’ll be able to save a lot of money.
The car bed has a frame that’s bigger than your average twin bed. This could be a problem if your child’s room is small.
I didn’t experience this problem, because I used a twin mattress, but I understand that if you use a crib mattress there are gaps between the mattress and the edges of the bed. You will need to put extra pillows or blankets around the mattress otherwise the unpadded portion will feel very uncomfortable.
Why I Like It So Much
What I liked, initially, with the Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed was the way it looked. When I saw it, I knew it would look great in my little guy’s room. His room is car themed, with wall stickers and borders and boy stuff. And I wasn’t disappointed. The car bed looked just as good in person as in the pictures, maybe even better.
I also liked the idea that it could be converted from a toddler bed to a twin bed.
The car bed is manufactured in the US and the quality is fantastic. It’s very durable and solid yet lightweight.
Assembly is a whiz. You can do it alone, although things will go faster if you have someone to help you, as long as it’s not your toddler.
I was sort of apprehensive at first that my son would not want to sleep by himself, but when he saw his new car bed he was practically begging to sleep in his own bed right away. We’ve had the bed for a couple of months now, and he’s still excited about it.
Final Word
If you have a little boy like mine, he’ll absolutely love the Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed. Bedtime will be something he’ll look forward to. And you’ll be glad to know that the car bed is something that can grow with him.
